As we mark the 20th anniversary of the North Africa and Middle East Science Centers Network (NAMES), the 2026 conference hosted by The Scientific Center, Kuwait, invites us to pause, reflect, and chart a bold path forward.
The theme, “Rethinking Engagement and Building Communities”, recognizes that the role of science centers and museums has evolved beyond the walls of our institutions.
Today, our greatest challenge and opportunity is to foster deep, authentic connections: with our audiences, with our partners, and with the communities we serve.
In the MENA region, this mission carries a particular weight. Science engagement here is not only about education and curiosity, it is about empowering young people, strengthening cultural identity, and contributing to the region’s innovation and sustainability agendas. Over the past two decades, NAMES has united institutions across North Africa and the Middle East in this shared pursuit, creating a network that amplifies local voices while connecting to the global movement of science communication.
This milestone gathering will bring together thought leaders, practitioners, and innovators from across the region and beyond to explore new models of participation, inclusivity, and impact. Together, we will share best practices, celebrate two decades of collaboration under the NAMES network, and co-create visions for the next 20 years of science engagement.
On behalf of the Program Committee, I welcome you to join us in Kuwait in 2026 for what promises to be a dynamic, inspiring, and future-shaping experience, one that affirms the vital role of science centers and museums in shaping the MENA region’s future.
