Innovating to Reach : Marketing ‘Expertise’

The reach of a science centre or science museum may be primarily targeted to various sections of the society for achieving greater breadth and higher inclusivity. However, established science centres may consider extending this reach in another domain by marketing their own technical expertise to organisations like Museums, Corporate houses and Government departments in need of such expertise for developing their own exhibits, facilities, travelling exhibitions, industrial expositions and campaigns. This requires an innovative acumen in building new areas of expertise and marketing them efficiently.

This presentation will describe the experience of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), India in this area and show how expertise in various functional areas has been developed and marketed as a part of the council’s business plan. This has resulted in added revenue income for the council whereas the user organisations have found a ready resource to support their own activities.
