Biography:

Dr. Mehmet Arik obtained his BSc degree in mechanical engineering from İstanbul Technical University, İstanbul, Turkey. He completed MSc degree at the University of Miami, USA. His PhD degree was awarded at the University of Minnesota (USA), focusing on the thermal management of advanced electronic components and Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), in 2001. He has worked at the General Electric Global Research Center in Niskayuna, NY, on the thermal management of electronics as a senior research scientist and project leader. He has performed research in air-cooled and liquid cooled power electronics, photonics packages, microfluidic systems, defense systems, energy technologies and medical systems.

Dr. Arik has joined department of mechanical engineering at Ozyegin University as a full time faculty member in 2011. He established a group of researchers (ARTgroup) over 16 people consisting of graduate students, research engineers, and support staff since 2012 focusing on energy, medical, electronics, defense and solid state lighting technologies. He established EVATEG center (Energy Efficient Lighting Technologies Research, Development, Education and Demonstration Center). This center has been established in collaboration with more than 10 global universities and research institutions and over 15 global companies.

Dr. Arik's current research interests include solid-state lighting, electronics cooling, microfluidics devices, energy, medical, defense systems, and Six Sigma. He is a member of ASME and IEEE. He is an ASME fellow. He holds over 100 US/EU/Asia and world patents and several applications are pending. He published over 125 papers in international journals and conferences, 4 books and book chapters in the fields of electronics cooling, energy systems, and MEMS. ARTgroup produced 2 US patent applications and 1 EU patents applications in 2013 and they are pending.

Dr. Arik serves as associate editor for IEEE Components and Packaging Technologies, ASME Journal of Electronics Packaging and ASME Thermal Sciences and Engineering Applications journals. He also serves for Journal of Solid State Lighting editorial board and scientific committee member for International Center for Heat and Mass Transfer.

From Ideas To Products – Innovation Path

While innovation is a key for technological advancements, and it’s immense contribution to global companies is an important factor for their growth and sustainability. Therefore, global technology companies heavily invest in technology for developing ground breaking and impactful products. Research and development (R&D) divisions of those high-tech companies are highly recognized and supported by corporate headquarters. R&D investments are usually over 15%, and it may exceed 40% of their total revenue depending on the eco system for each company. Innovators make up backbones for those technology companies and finding world-class scientists and engineers is a worldwide problem everywhere. Resources, innovators, cultures, patience and passion make up innovation environment and return on investment (ROI) pays off at different levels depending on country, local and global needs, and acceptance of innovative products.

In this presentation, examples of innovation from ideas to practice for various products (medical, energy, electronics, lighting, and appliances etc.) in a global company environment will be presented. Then attention will be turned into how to grow innovation and where science centers can play in the development of “CANDO” attitude will be discussed. Closure for the presentation will consist of sharing some of the personal experiences in a global corporate and ways to keep innovation-edge open.
